SECONDARY ELA
Genre-based Units
Middle School and High School units of instruction will continue to be organized by genre. This year, middle school teachers will use the inquiry approach, as outlined by Fountas & Pinnell, to launch genre units. They will also begin transitioning to a Reader's Workshop model. As is best practice, our pacing calendars reflect a bridge between reading and writing, tied together by genre. Generally speaking, when our kids are reading a particular genre, they are also writing in this genre. The connections that can be made with this model are limitless! |
Differentiated InstructionSecondary teachers will begin using teacher-led small group instruction to meet the diverse needs of their students.
|
Workshop ApproachSecondary teachers will continue to implement and refine Writer's Workshop. Middle school teachers will begin learning how to run Reader's Workshops as well!

Growth Mindset
Transitioning to workshop-style classrooms and genre based units will require lots of work and problem solving. Ensuring that we,
as educators, have a growth mindset will help us stay focused as we work toward our shared goal: increased student achievement.
